Our Story
The Beckons journey has its origins on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Lord Howe Island, some 400 miles off the coast of New South Wales. It was 2003, and Baillie Lodges founders James and Hayley Baillie were opening their first luxury lodge, with an intimate nine guest suites commanding cinematic views of Mounts Gower and Lidgbird. Capella Lodge, the first in the Baillie Lodges portfolio, was born. In 2008, they opened flagship property Southern Ocean Lodge on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, and then added Longitude 131° in Australia’s Red Centre, which established the Baillies as leaders in both conservation and experience-led travel.
The couple entered a joint venture with KSL Capital Partners in 2019, and soon added Queensland’s Silky Oaks Lodge and The Louise in the Barossa to the portfolio. International expansion followed with the addition of legendary Huka Lodge on New Zealand’s North Island and Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge in Canada. In 2022, Chile’s esteemed Tierra Hotels was brought into the fold, adding Tierra Atacama and Tierra Patagonia to the collection. In 2026, the globally celebrated and award winning Baillie Lodges and Tierra Hotels united under a new brand, Beckons, evolving the founders’ original ethos in appealing to a next generation of the world’s most discerning and curious travelers.
